Football

Football is played at Club every Wednesday, during our rolling programme, Football takes its turn in being played for the whole session, but every week it is played for the last 30 minutes as it is so popular. In addition to the Club session we also have a Football Training Session every Sunday held at Plymstock School from 10 to 11am.

We're Looking for New Team Members!

Special Olympics Plymouth - Football

SOPD has two Men’s Football Teams in the 5-a-side Devon FA Ability Counts League where we have had great success in past years. This year we have entered a Ladies Team but we are looking for more Ladies to play for us, so if you fancy getting involved come along to either a Wednesday or Sunday session and give Football a go.

Coaches/Volunteers

We have a great group of Coaches and Volunteers who assist on a Wednesday with Stuart and Dan running the session, we are very grateful to our Volunteers; many of them local Students who help to make sure that all the Athletes get involved and have a great time.

On Sunday, Stuart Jones who is the SOPD Sports Lead takes a Football only training session, he is an excellent Coach who in 2013 was nominated and won the Plymouth Young Sports Volunteer of the Year Award which was very well deserved. Stuart has volunteered with SOPD for over two years now.

David assists Stuart with coaching on a Sunday, David is one of our Athlete’s and play’s in our Football Team, and he expressed an interest in Coaching so we supported him in taking his Level One Coaching Qualification.

Competition and Past Success

As well as having our three teams in the 5-a-side Devon FA Ability Counts League which holds tournaments regularly we took a Football Team to the Special Olympic National Summer Games in August 2013 where the team had a really exciting time and finished fifth in a very competitive group.

Can I Try Football?

Come along on a Wednesday Evening and give Football a go - whether you just want to have some fun playing or if you would like to take the Sport to the next level and play for one of our teams. For further details about the Wednesday Club Night please see the Athlete Section.
